Wakeland Opens District Play with Victory over Heritage

The Wakeland football team won its third straight game Friday, breaking open a close matchup with 28 straight points to beat Heritage 49-28 at FISD Memorial Stadium.

Wakeland is now 3-1 overall and is 1-0 in District 5-5A Division I play.

The game was tied 21-21 midway through the second quarter, but E.J. White and Cade Starnes scored on touchdown runs before halftime to give Wakeland a 35-21 lead. White scored on another touchdown run in the third quarrter, and Peyton Lewis followed with a 12-yard interception return to give the Wolverines a 49-21 lead.

Dylan Laible completed 10 of 12 passes for 152 yards for Wakeland, while Starnes and White each rushed for three touchdowns. Starnes led all rushers with 14 carries for 144 yards.

The Wakeland defense intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble.

Wakeland returns to action on Friday, Oct. 5, in a matchup against Lone Star. The game is at 7 p.m. at Ford Center.
