Wakeland, the two-time defending 5A champion, earned a trip to Georgetown with a 1-0 victory Saturday over Mount Pleasant in the 5A Region II final.
On a wet and windy day, the winning goal was scored with 11:25 left in the match after Wakeland's Todd Fuller sent a free kick in front of the goal. Fuller's kick, from about 30 yards in front of the goal on the right side, curled and hung in the air in front of the net, and Wakeland's William Hitchcock headed it past the goalkeeper.
Wakeland (20-2-5) will play Houston Sharpstown (21-2-2) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a 5A state semifinal. If the Wolverines win, they'll play the winner of El Paso Bel Air (26-1) and Pharr Valley View (18-13) in the championship game on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Wakeland will be making its sixth overall state appearance at the tournament. The Wolverines were state champions in 2010, 2017 and 2018, the state runner-up in 2016, and a state semifinalist in 2014.
