State meets are always a showcase for the Frisco ISD swimming and diving programs, and this year, the showcase included another prize for the trophy case.

After finishing as the 5A state runner-up the last two years, the Wakeland High School boys team won the 5A state championship at Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio. The Wolverines’ state championship was the highlight of state competition in which FISD athletes won three individual state championships and the District earned medals in 13 events.

Wakeland won the boys team championship with 215 points, finishing ahead of Georgetown (207), which won the state title two years ago. The Wolverines had been building toward this the last two years, Wakeland coach Melissa Howard said.

“To see this come to fruition, to see all that hard work pay off, it means everything,” Howard said. “It’s fun to see them rewarded this way.”

Frisco High finished 10th in the boys standings and Wakeland was the top finisher in the girls standings at No. 11. Nine of FISD’s 10 high schools scored points at the state meet and the District’s medalists represented five schools.

Wakeland’s second state boys title (the other was in 2014) gives Frisco ISD a total of seven state swimming and diving team titles. Frisco High has won three boys titles and two girls titles since 2005.

Depth was the key this year for the Wakeland boys, who finished on the medal stand in each of the three relays – the 200-yard medley relay, the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle – and also featured an individual champion: Conor McKenna in the 100 butterfly. McKenna was also third in the 200 free.

Frisco ISD’s other boys individual state title was won by Memorial High School’s Andrew Guziec in the 500 freestyle. Independence’s Sienna Schellenger won the girls 100 free and was second in the 50 free. The District’s other swimmers to medal in multiple events were Lone Star’s Joelle Reddin (second in the girls 200 individual medley and second in the 500 free) and Frisco’s Jon VanZandt (second in the boys 50 free and third in the 50 free).
