For most high school soccer programs, winning a region title and advancing to the state semifinals is a rare feat. But at Wakeland, having a soccer team – or teams – playing on the final week of the playoffs is a regular occurrence.

This year, both the Wakeland boys and girls soccer teams have qualified for the 5A state semifinals. The Wakeland girls earned a spot Friday by beating previously undefeated Highland Park 2-1 in overtime. The following day, the Wakeland boys advanced to a state semifinal with a 1-0 victory over Longview.

McKenna Jenkins scored both goals for the Wakeland girls in the win over Highland Park, including the winner that came with eight minutes left in the second overtime period. Ryan Greener scored the only goal in the Wakeland boys’ victory over Longview that sent the Wolverines to yet another state semifinal.

In the Wakeland boys’ fifth straight state semifinal appearance, they’ll face El Paso Del Valle at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Midland. The Wakeland girls will take on Grapevine at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Denton High School’s Bronco Field.

It’s an exciting time for Wakeland soccer, which in 2018 pulled off a sweep of the 5A state soccer titles when the boys and girls each claimed the trophy.

Their success is also part of a long stretch of soccer success in Frisco ISD. In the last four seasons, (2016-2019 because 2020 playoffs were canceled), FISD teams have played in six state title games and won four state titles. The Wakeland boys played in four straight title games and won the title in 2017 and 2018. The Wakeland girls won the state title in 2018 and the Centennial girls won in 2016.
