The Wakeland soccer teams capped another incredible season over the weekend with a state championship and a state runner-up finish at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.

The Wakeland boys soccer team earned the 5A state title with a 3-2 victory Saturday over Humble Kingwood Park. The Wakeland girls team fell just short of the state title, losing a 2-1 battle against Dripping Springs.

The boys victory gave Wakeland its fourth state title in boys soccer and this was the fifth straight season in which the Wakeland boys team advanced to the state title game. That streak dates back to 2016, with the only year Wakeland didn’t make it to the state final coming last year – when the playoffs were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We had a great group last year that helped these young kids and show them the way,” Wakeland coach Andy Holt told the Dallas Morning News. “I was obviously disappointed last year that those guys didn’t get the chance, but we responded really well with this group. They stepped up and worked for what seems like two years.”

Wakeland’s Brennan Bezdek, who scored the first goal of the game, was named the championship game MVP. The other goals were scored by Jak Keith and Micah Kelly.

The Wakeland girls team scored first in its championship game when McKenna Jenkins scored late in the first half. But Dripping Springs evened the game just before halftime and scored again early in the second half. Wakeland put lots of pressure on Dripping Springs in the second half, but couldn’t get the tying goal.

The Wakeland performances extended an incredible run by the Wolverines and the deep pool of soccer talent in Frisco ISD. In the last five seasons (dating back to the 2016 season because the 2020 playoffs were canceled), FISD teams played in eight state title games and won five state titles. The Wakeland boys won state titles in 2017, ’18 and this year during the run. The Wakeland girls won the state title in 2018 and the Centennial girls won in 2016.

Congratulations to the Frisco ISD soccer players who were selected to the All-Tournament Team at the state tournament.
